KOSPI Erases a 1.15% Gain as Foreign Selling Hits KRW 2.28 Trillion

The KOSPI erased an intraday gain of as much as 1.15% and closed at 6,715.41, down 0.04%. The KOSDAQ finished 0.76% higher at 822.18. The split tells the story of the session: foreign investors continued to reduce large semiconductor positions, but domestic capital rotated into industrials, financials and high-beta KOSDAQ themes.

A hawkish Fed was absorbed, but the won and foreign flows were not

The Federal Reserve raised its target range by 25 basis points to 3.75–4.00%. Korean equities initially treated the decision as largely priced in. The KOSPI opened at 6,779.02 and reached 6,795.53 before losing momentum. Pressure built as USD/KRW closed 13.6 won higher at 1,382.2 and foreign investors sold a net KRW 2.2803 trillion of KOSPI shares.

Samsung Electronics fell 0.39% and SK hynix lost 0.80%, enough to offset strength elsewhere because of their large index weights. Retail investors bought a net KRW 413.6 billion and institutions added KRW 158.8 billion, limiting the decline. On the KOSDAQ, institutions were net buyers while foreign and retail investors sold modestly.

Breadth was stronger than the headline index

There were 453 KOSPI advancers versus 398 decliners. On the KOSDAQ, 927 stocks rose and 635 fell. This was not a broad risk-off session. It was a rotation away from mega-cap chips toward companies with visible order books, cash-flow resilience or fresh catalysts. That distinction matters for global investors: the index looked weak, but the median stock experience was better.

Shipbuilding and defense led the industrial rotation

Transportation equipment gained 2.40% and machinery rose 1.97%. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries advanced 6.58%, while Hanwha Aerospace gained 3.98%. Shipbuilders attracted buyers after a sharp correction because commercial-vessel and engine backlogs still support multi-year earnings visibility. Expectations for additional LNG carrier orders added to the rebound.

Defense names also held firm as investors revisited overseas air-defense and land-systems opportunities. Hanwha Aerospace and Hanwha Systems offer export exposure that can be relatively resilient when the won weakens, although future returns will still depend on confirmed contract timing and local-production economics.

Space components drove the KOSDAQ’s higher-beta pocket

The approaching SpaceX Starship test flight triggered a rally in Korean aerospace suppliers. Sensorview jumped more than 20% intraday, while Kencoa Aerospace and CONTEC also drew interest. The move was catalyst-driven rather than a blanket growth-stock rally: Samchundang Pharm and Rainbow Robotics rose, but EcoPro BM and several semiconductor-equipment names declined.

Banks absorbed the rate shock

KB Financial gained 1.41% and Shinhan Financial rose 1.07%. Higher global rates raise discount-rate pressure for long-duration growth stocks, but they can support bank margin expectations. Capital-return programs also provide valuation support. The counter-risk is that a prolonged currency decline raises domestic funding and credit costs.

KSI view: healthier internals, but the index needs confirmation

The most important signal was not the KOSPI’s 0.04% decline. It was the fact that advancers outnumbered decliners despite another heavy round of foreign semiconductor selling. The market did not abandon risk indiscriminately; it repriced risk toward order-backed shipbuilding, export defense, banks and event-driven space components.

For the next session, watch whether USD/KRW stabilizes near 1,380, whether foreign selling in Samsung Electronics and SK hynix begins to ease, and whether the industrial rally retains turnover. Improvement in at least two of those conditions would make it more likely that the next intraday rebound survives into the close.
