KOSDAQ Jumps 4.48% as Korea’s Rebound Broadens Across Equipment, Steel and Gaming

Korea’s smaller-company benchmark delivered the stronger signal on October 1, 2026: the KOSDAQ gained 4.48% to 894.29, while the KOSPI rose 1.95%, or 133.31 points, to 6,971.35. Advancers outnumbered decliners in both markets. This was a broader recovery than an index rally supported by a handful of heavyweight stocks, although investor flows still showed a preference for different parts of the market.

A weak opening became a strong finish

The KOSPI opened at 6,814.49 and fell as low as 6,765.06 before finishing almost exactly at its session high of 6,971.36. The KOSDAQ opened at 853.96 and closed at its daily high, adding 38.38 points. The reversal matters: early selling pressure did not dictate the closing outcome.

Naver’s post-session market tally showed 542 KOSPI advancers against 332 decliners, with positive breadth on the KOSDAQ as well. Foreign investors were net sellers on the main board while institutions bought. On the KOSDAQ, both groups were net buyers. Those directions support a distinction between broadening participation and indiscriminate buying across the entire market; they do not prove that any single headline caused the flows.

Equipment demand is the next test of the export boom

Official September trade data provided a tangible industrial backdrop. Korea exported $120.94 billion of goods, up 83.5% from a year earlier. Semiconductor exports reached $60.30 billion, up 262.8%. These national monthly figures should not be treated as quarterly revenue or profit for listed companies.

Front-end semiconductor equipment is the first Focus theme. Jusung Engineering (036930) closed the regular session at KRW238,500 and Wonik IPS (240810) at KRW141,700. The investment case links better memory conditions to customer expansion and equipment orders. KSI’s next test is the timing of actual orders and revenue recognition: stronger industry demand does not guarantee identical outcomes for every supplier.

Steel: a policy reaction, with contracts still to establish

Alaska LNG expectations formed a second theme. Steel shares attracted buying after President Trump’s remarks about the project. Daehan Steel (084010) finished at KRW9,120, below its KRW10,120 intraday high. Its inclusion reflects an observed market response, not verified participation in the project or a supply award.

Contemporaneous reporting described Korea’s position as requiring further review before an investment decision. A proposal, financing decision, supplier selection and signed contract are separate milestones. Investors should therefore avoid converting a sector narrative directly into company revenue.

Gaming: launch expectations need recurring revenue

The third theme is gaming around a global product launch. Electronic Times reported that AION2 began global early access at 10 p.m. Korea time on September 30. NC (036570) closed October 1 at KRW230,000, below its daily high of KRW236,500. These are regular-session prices, separate from the intraday quote in the news report.

The relevant follow-through is sustained demand, repeat payments and profitability after operating and marketing costs. An encouraging launch can change earnings expectations without establishing the eventual quarterly result.

What would make the rebound durable?

KSI reads the session as a recovery with broader participation and particularly strong KOSDAQ momentum. The next session should test whether foreign and institutional buying and positive breadth persist there, and whether the KOSPI can absorb supply near 7,000. Equipment orders, concrete LNG investment or contract milestones, and durable game monetization are distinct evidence to monitor. Stock percentage returns and unverified foreign-exchange figures are omitted; all quoted stock prices refer to the October 1 regular session.
