KOSPI Falls 1.46% as Robotics and Medical AI Draw Selective Buying
Korea’s smaller growth stocks took the heavier hit on October 26. The KOSDAQ lost 3.26% to 727.21, while the KOSPI fell 1.46% to 5,469.47. Buying in Lunit and ROBOTIS showed that specific business catalysts could still attract capital. It did not amount to a broad recovery in risk appetite. Our preference is to examine how each catalyst can become revenue before extending that optimism to an entire sector.

The KOSPI opened at 5,499.05 and briefly reached 5,565.67, above the previous close of 5,550.30, before surrendering the rebound. Naver Finance’s same-day breadth showed 101 advancing stocks and 792 decliners, a ratio of roughly 7.8 to one. This is a much weaker picture than a modest index decline alone might suggest for a diversified portfolio.

Higher oil prices and renewed Middle East tensions added cost pressure to the backdrop, while investors awaited this week’s monetary-policy decisions and major earnings releases. Foreign investors were net sellers on the KOSPI; institutions and individuals bought on balance. Their demand did not produce broad participation. The won actually strengthened: the 3:30 p.m. USD/KRW reference was 1,323.1, down 1.5 won. Currency weakness therefore offers an inadequate explanation for the equity decline.
Medical AI supplied a distinct catalyst. ChosunBiz reported that Lunit announced an AI biomarker research agreement with Summit Therapeutics for ivonescimab development. The stock was up 26.11% at KRW 14,250 at 9:26 a.m. KST. The potential attraction is an expansion from cancer screening into drug-development workflows. The announcement concerns research collaboration; it does not establish a disclosed upfront payment or a quantified revenue contribution.
For Lunit, repeated use of its technology by pharmaceutical researchers could create a route to paid services. Evidence that its analysis helps define patient groups or assess drug response would make that route more tangible. We would look for the scope of deployment and follow-on commercial agreements. A research partnership that fails to progress would leave the valuation response without comparable earnings support.
ROBOTIS offered a more physical volume link. MTN reported a strategic procurement agreement ceremony with Pollen Robotics and said each Micro Duck robot uses 15 DYNAMIXEL XL330 actuators. Pollen’s target of 100,000 robot sales this year would imply 1.5 million actuators if achieved; these are target-based requirements, not completed deliveries. News1’s 1:52 p.m. report described a 12.67% intraday rise in ROBOTIS. MTN placed planned robot shipments in December.
The appeal is the connection between consumer robot sales and component demand. Execution will depend on converting reservations into shipments and expanding production without losing the economics to cost increases. Delivery delays would postpone revenue, while higher manufacturing costs could limit the profit gained from additional units. We would give actual shipments and margins more weight than a larger demand forecast.
Memory leaders were comparatively resilient but still closed lower. Samsung Electronics ended at KRW 213,000, down 1.16%, and SK hynix at KRW 1,275,000, down 0.16%. Yonhap reported that SK hynix had said nothing was finalized following reports of a possible special dividend tied to Kioxia stake-sale gains. That prospective payment should not be treated as committed cash. Upcoming earnings commentary on memory demand and investment is the more useful basis for assessing the business.

The next session’s test is whether participation improves alongside reduced foreign selling. Continued strength in a handful of robotics and medical-AI names would still leave a narrow market. Broader recovery among smaller companies, supported by credible demand commentary from memory producers, would strengthen the case for increasing market exposure. Until then, our emphasis remains on identifiable steps from research to contracts, reservations to shipments, and customer investment to supplier earnings.
