KOSPI Falls 3.73% as Flitto Earnings and Biotech Evaluation Draw Selective Buying
Korean equities lost their two-session rebound on October 20. The KOSPI fell 3.73% to 5,552.74 and the KOSDAQ declined 3.33% to 781.97. We see a market rewarding a few company-specific developments while broad risk appetite remains weak; improving participation and easing foreign and institutional selling would change that assessment on October 21.
The KOSPI lost 215.27 points, more than twice its 99.96-point gain on Monday. Decliners outnumbered advancers 773 to 120, including two limit-up stocks. Foreign investors and institutions sold net in both markets. This was a widespread retreat, with selling also reaching the battery shares that had helped the previous recovery.
KB Securities commentary carried by Buffett Lab linked the pressure to AI-related credit concerns and oil and interest-rate risks. Our interpretation is that investors are demanding more compensation for financing and valuation risk. A plausible growth story can therefore coexist with a falling share price. Realized operating earnings provide a useful way to distinguish opportunities within that environment.
Flitto (300080) supplied such an earnings event. Its preliminary consolidated third-quarter revenue was KRW17.786 billion and operating profit KRW8.972 billion, up 50.97% and 217.05% year on year. A report placed the shares at KRW10,750, up 29.99%, at 1:35 p.m.; a later observation in the same report was KRW10,700, up 29.38%, at 3:10 p.m. These are intraday observations, not closing prices.
The company attributed its performance to growth in AI interpretation and translation solutions. Faster profit growth than revenue growth is encouraging, in our view, but the next test is repeat orders and revenue conversion. Contract recognition timing can make quarterly earnings uneven, so extending this quarter’s margin mechanically through a full year would be a weak valuation assumption.
G2GBIO (456160) represented a different opportunity: external evaluation of its long-acting injectable platform. The shares were up 9.16% at KRW35,150 at 9:31 a.m. Its October 19 agreement with China’s UBT applies InnoLAMP to a specified candidate to assess development feasibility. Consideration is undisclosed; the initial term ends when the research finishes or after 12 months, whichever comes first, with extension possible by written agreement.
We see value in adding an external development partner and testing the platform with another candidate. Successful formulation and release-profile evaluation could support further collaboration. The evaluation outcome and the economics of any subsequent agreement will determine the commercial value; the current agreement does not establish product sales or a large licensing payoff.
Hyungji Elite (093240) was an event-driven trading pocket. It resumed trading after a five-for-one share consolidation and was reported up 30.00% at KRW1,924 at 9:20 a.m.; Hyungji Global was also limit-up at that time. Consolidation changes share count and price per share without itself increasing business value. We assign this reaction a more speculative character than the earnings and platform-development cases.
For October 21, we would distinguish the persistence of these individual reactions from a decision to increase broad market exposure. Fewer declining stocks, less simultaneous foreign and institutional selling, and stabilization in the previous session’s leaders would strengthen the recovery case. Until those signals appear together, a handful of sharp advances offers limited evidence that market-wide risk has receded.
