KOSPI Falls 3.52% as Tightening Concerns Override the Rebound
Korean equities surrendered the previous day’s rebound on October 22. The KOSPI fell 3.52% to 5,533.77 and the KOSDAQ lost 3.62% to 764.10. With 709 KOSPI decliners against 174 advancers, this was a broad retreat. Our preference is to examine visible earnings and funded shareholder returns selectively while waiting for institutional demand to recover before treating a bounce as a market-wide opportunity.

The Bank of Korea held its policy rate at 3.00%. Edaily’s closing report linked the widening equity decline to the governor’s signal that restrictive policy still needed to continue. A pause leaves the level and duration of financing costs important. Businesses valued heavily on distant earnings remain exposed if investors apply a higher discount rate, even when their underlying sales opportunity is intact.

Foreign investors and individuals bought KOSPI shares on balance, while institutions sold. On the KOSDAQ, both foreign and institutional investors were net sellers against individual buying. The contrast makes the small positive foreign direction in large caps insufficient evidence of restored risk appetite. We would want broader participation as well as a reduction in institutional selling.
Memory chips remained the key index pressure point. Samsung Electronics closed down 4.03% at KRW 214,500 and SK hynix lost 5.49% to KRW 1,223,000 in the regular session. Their reversal illustrates the gap between an attractive long-run AI market and the price investors are prepared to pay today. Sustained shipments can support earnings without ensuring that valuation multiples expand.
Plant engineering provided a selective earnings catalyst. At 9:15 a.m. KST, Samsung E&A traded 14.68% higher at KRW 54,700; this is an intraday observation. The company reported preliminary third-quarter revenue of KRW 2.9105 trillion and operating profit of KRW 500.6 billion, up 45.8% and 183.6% year on year. It raised its full-year operating-profit outlook from KRW 800 billion to KRW 1.4 trillion. Our constructive reading rests on projects converting into recognized earnings.

The accompanying buyback plan totals roughly KRW 780 billion, scheduled for October 23 through January 22, 2027. KRW 690 billion is intended for cancellation, with KRW 90 billion allocated to employee compensation and related purposes. These are planned purchases and uses, rather than completed cancellations. Cash collection and project cost control will determine how comfortably the earnings improvement supports those commitments.
AI package substrates offered a different lesson. Samsung Electro-Mechanics rose 3.08% at 9:33 a.m. after news of its NVIDIA supply partnership, but finished the regular session down 1.97%. Dedicated capacity at Sejong and Busan and multiyear supply plans can widen the revenue base. The next economic tests are capacity utilization, deliveries and margins; a delayed ramp would extend the interval between investment spending and cash returns.

The useful distinction across these themes is the stage of earnings realization. Memory valuation remains sensitive to rates and expectations, engineering has delivered an earnings upgrade, and substrates require execution of capacity and supply plans. They should not be treated as equivalent exposures simply because AI or industrial investment connects them.
For October 23, our assessment would become more constructive if institutional selling eases, KOSPI participation improves and the joint foreign-institutional selling on KOSDAQ ends. If stocks with fresh earnings upgrades cannot retain their gains, the case for increasing exposure remains weak. Those are more useful tests than the index briefly reclaiming a round number.
