[Aug. 5] Korea Stock Market Wrap
This Korea stock market wrap examines five important signals from the August 5, 2026 rally. Korean equities extended their recovery as buying spread from large-cap semiconductor shares into optical networking, power equipment, physical AI, robotics, batteries, and industrial technology.
The session was notable because the rally was no longer concentrated in one speculative theme. Investors were buying the cables that move AI data, the transformers that power data centers, the robots that automate factories, and the memory products that feed artificial-intelligence accelerators. The market finally stopped arguing about whether AI was real and started pricing the electric bill.
1. KOSPI and KOSDAQ Extended Their Recovery
The KOSPI closed at 6,598.26, while the KOSDAQ advanced to 799.59. The rally followed the sharp August 4 rebound, but market leadership changed. Biotechnology had dominated the previous session, while communication equipment, power infrastructure, robots, and semiconductors moved to the front on August 5.
Readers can compare the two sessions in our August 4 Korea stock market wrap. The comparison shows that the rebound is broadening rather than relying on one isolated theme.
2. Optical Networking Became the Strongest Theme
Optical communication stocks surged after reports that the United States was considering tighter restrictions on Chinese optical transceivers used in data centers. Investors immediately focused on Korean suppliers that could benefit from alternative sourcing and local production.
- Inno Instrument +30.00% — demand expectations for optical communication equipment
- OE Solutions +29.84% — possible benefits from U.S. restrictions on Chinese components
- Light & Electronics +29.89% — stronger interest in data-center optical infrastructure
- Daehan Optical Fiber +18.57% — renewed demand for fiber and network expansion
The investment logic was straightforward. Artificial-intelligence servers cannot communicate efficiently through ordinary copper connections alone. As computing density rises, optical transmission becomes a critical part of the infrastructure stack.
3. Power Equipment Confirmed the AI Infrastructure Cycle
Power-related stocks advanced as investors connected expanding data-center demand with the need for transmission lines, transformers, cables, backup generation, and fuel-cell systems.
KBI Metal reached the daily limit, while Hyosung Heavy Industries, Daewon Cable, Taihan Cable & Solution, LS, LS Electric, and HD Hyundai Electric all posted strong gains. Doosan Fuel Cell also surged after announcing a major overseas solid-oxide fuel-cell component contract.
4. Physical AI and Robotics Returned to Center Stage
MakinaRocks jumped 29.85% after applying a physical-AI anomaly-detection solution to welding robots used by HD Korea Shipbuilding. The project showed how industrial AI can move beyond laboratory demonstrations and into real production lines.
Elensys also reached the daily limit as investors focused on its history of supplying reduction motors for Samsung-related robot products. Rainbow Robotics, Newen AI, and Saltlux gained as enthusiasm returned to humanoid robots, industrial automation, and AI software.
The common denominator was real-world deployment. Investors rewarded companies that could demonstrate measurable factory data, commercial customers, and products already connected to production systems.
5. Semiconductors Rejoined the Rally
Samsung Electronics gained 2.50%, while SK hynix rose 5.77%. Investors focused on continued hyperscaler spending, tight memory supply, and expectations that AI-related memory demand could remain strong for several years.
Samsung also unveiled a next-generation 3D memory concept that vertically stacks high-bandwidth memory above AI accelerators. Samsung Electro-Mechanics and LG Innotek rallied on robotaxi camera-module expectations and continued shortages in AI-related substrates and electronic components.
