KOSPI Rebounds 3.29% as Memory Chips Lead a Narrow Recovery

Korea’s equity rebound on October 21 was strongest where export earnings are most visible. The KOSPI rose 3.29% to 5,735.66 and the KOSDAQ gained 1.38% to 792.76, but more KOSPI stocks fell than rose. Our view is to treat this as a concentrated recovery led by memory chips; broader participation on October 22 would make the case for a market-wide recovery more convincing.

Foreign investors bought KOSPI shares while selling KOSDAQ shares. The won also strengthened, with the 3:30 p.m. dollar close down KRW 2.9 to KRW 1,325.2. That combination supports a recovery in appetite for Korea’s large exporters, while the split in foreign flows argues against assuming equivalent demand for smaller growth companies.

Breadth illustrates the distinction. Pressian reported 372 KOSPI advancers and 490 decliners. On the KOSDAQ, Maeil Business reported 829 advancing stocks against 802 declining stocks. An investor holding a broad selection of individual companies could therefore experience much less improvement than the headline KOSPI return suggests.

Memory chips form the first focus. Samsung Electronics gained 5.67% and SK hynix 5.81%. Korea Customs Service added tangible evidence behind the earnings debate: preliminary exports for October 1–20 totaled USD 61.6 billion, including USD 27.5 billion in semiconductors. Total exports rose 105.4% year on year; adjusting for working days still left daily exports up 65.9%. The improvement was not explained solely by a longer working calendar.

We see continued shipments as a route from AI customer spending to memory suppliers’ revenue and cash generation. Export values combine prices and volumes, however, so they do not measure capacity growth directly. Company results showing sustained shipments, pricing and margins would strengthen the earnings case; delayed customer orders would weaken it.

The second focus is semiconductor equipment. Jusung Engineering rose 3.48% and PSK gained 3.21%. These suppliers offer exposure to the next stage of the investment cycle: customers turning demand into actual factory spending. Revenue depends on orders, delivery and acceptance, which creates a lag between strong chip exports and equipment earnings. We would give greater weight to order conversion than to a single session’s sympathy rally.

Biotech was a third, selective pocket of strength. Alteogen advanced 3.90% and Sam Chun Dang Pharm 3.66%, whereas HLB fell 1.51%. The dispersion matters: today’s price action identifies companies to watch, without establishing a sector-wide improvement in approvals or commercial contracts. Product commercialization and revenue recognition remain the business milestones that could justify higher expectations.

For portfolio decisions, the sequence is useful. Memory has the clearest direct connection to the latest export evidence; equipment depends on the subsequent capital-spending cycle; biotech needs company-specific milestones. Treating all three as interchangeable risk exposure would obscure the different routes to earnings.

On October 22, we would broaden our constructive assessment if memory leaders retain their gains, KOSPI advances outnumber declines and foreign investors return to buying KOSDAQ shares. If the index rises while participation narrows further, concentration deserves more attention. Subsequent earnings upgrades would provide a stronger foundation than another index jump alone.
