[Aug. 13] Korea Stock Market Wrap
This Korea stock market wrap examines five signals from the August 13, 2026 rally. The KOSPI jumped more than 3%, but the move was not evenly distributed. Samsung Electronics, SK hynix and the broader semiconductor supply chain did most of the heavy lifting, while energy infrastructure and a handful of event-driven stocks provided additional momentum.
What stood out to me was the return of large-cap leadership. Recent rebounds often depended on smaller thematic names. This time, the heavyweight memory stocks were back in front. That makes the rally more meaningful, although I still want to see the strength broaden before calling it a clean trend reversal.
1. Korea Stock Market Wrap: KOSPI Surged 3.56%
The KOSPI closed at 6,813.34, while the KOSDAQ gained only 0.29% to 861.37. That gap tells us almost everything about the session. Large semiconductor stocks drove the index higher, but speculative growth stocks did not rise at the same pace.
For comparison, read the August 11 Korea stock market wrap. Samsung-related stocks were already gaining leadership then, and August 13 strengthened that trend considerably.
2. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix Returned to Center Stage
Samsung Electronics rose 4.89% and SK hynix gained 5.92%. Cooling U.S. inflation reduced rate-hike concerns, while stronger AI-chip sentiment and expectations for a prolonged memory upcycle supported both companies.
Memory pricing remains a central part of the story. The market is betting that DRAM and NAND tightness will persist as AI infrastructure spending absorbs increasing amounts of high-performance memory.
- Samsung Electronics +4.89% — memory-cycle and AI demand expectations
- SK hynix +5.92% — HBM demand and ADR strength
- Mirae Industry +19.37% — earnings surprise and capacity expansion
- Samsung Electro-Mechanics +12.58% — MLCC and ABF substrate supply tightness
3. AI Data Centers Pulled Energy Stocks Higher
G2Power jumped 29.89% after receiving Korea’s first CB certification for an immersion-cooled ESS system. Samkee Energy Solutions gained 19.20% on record sales and expanding ESS-component demand.
Fuel-cell and backup-power stocks also benefited. GNC Energy rose 14.94%, while investors continued to price in the enormous electricity requirements of AI data centers.
This is one of the themes I continue to watch closely. AI servers are useful only when there is enough electricity to run them. The investment chain therefore extends from memory chips to batteries, generators, fuel cells, grid equipment and cooling systems.
4. Beauty and Healthcare Remained Selectively Strong
K-beauty and healthcare remained active, but the session was much more selective than the semiconductor rally. Export diversification, regulatory approvals and commercialization milestones remained the factors that mattered most.
The broader lesson is that investors are beginning to reward measurable progress rather than simply attaching a premium to every fashionable theme. That is healthy for the market.
5. Smaller Themes Still Produced Explosive Moves
K&S INC surged on its KOSDAQ debut and satellite-antenna growth story. Kumho Electric hit the daily limit as expectations surrounding the Honam semiconductor cluster continued. PS Electronics also reached the daily limit as investors focused on AI-server orders and the possibility of additional contracts.
Space-related stocks, AI cloud companies and semiconductor-cluster beneficiaries also participated. These moves can be powerful, but they carry much higher execution risk than the large-cap semiconductor trade.
