KOSPI Reverses Opening Slump as Batteries, Biopharma and Autos Lead a Broader Rebound
Korean equities reversed a steep opening loss on October 19, with buying extending beyond the largest chipmakers. Our reading is that the rebound gained breadth through batteries, biopharma and autos. The October 20 test is whether those groups retain their relative strength and institutional demand persists.
The KOSPI finished at 5,768.01, up 99.96 points or 1.76%. The KOSDAQ added 14.11 points, or 1.78%, to 808.89. From a KOSPI opening level of 5,488.41, the market recovered 279.60 points by the close. That reversal shows buyers absorbing the early selloff rather than simply defending a flat opening.
Advancing KOSPI shares outnumbered decliners. Institutions were net buyers while foreign investors and individuals were net sellers. The widening rally is constructive, in our view, but foreign participation would give it a firmer funding base. A single session does not establish that participation.
Energy storage provided a recognizable business narrative for batteries. LG Energy Solution closed 7.20% higher. Late-morning reporting also showed gains across Samsung SDI and battery-material names, linking the group to expectations for North American energy-storage demand. We would watch whether strength continues across the supply chain, rather than relying on one large stock.
Samsung SDI supplied a useful operating anchor in its July 30 earnings release: AI data-center demand for ESS, uninterruptible power supplies and battery-backup units contributed to its first-half recovery. It also disclosed long-term supply agreements with major US ESS customers. These applications can expand the customer base beyond electric vehicles.
The earnings bridge still matters. US manufacturing credits and tariff refunds helped second-quarter profitability. We see a stronger investment case if rising shipments and a better product mix sustain improvement as refund benefits fade; launch costs at new production lines could otherwise absorb part of the revenue gain.
Samsung Biologics rose 9.94% at the close. The KOSPI pharmaceutical industry index had gained 5.37% at 2:27 p.m., supporting the observation that buying reached beyond a single company. Separately, an October 19 report described the company promoting research-to-commercial ADC services at World ADC San Diego, held October 12–15. Connecting early development customers to commercial manufacturing could create longer relationships, but new contracts and production schedules will determine the revenue opportunity.
Hyundai Motor gained 4.49%, giving the rebound a cyclical component alongside batteries and biopharma. We treat that move as evidence of broader participation without assigning it to an unverified new order. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix also finished higher, by 1.16% and 0.39%, respectively, but their more modest gains underline why a chip-only explanation misses the session.
For October 20, our priority is the durability of participation: battery suppliers holding gains, Samsung Biologics and Hyundai Motor remaining relatively strong, and foreign demand joining institutional buying. A quick reversal in those leaders accompanied by expanding declines would weaken the recovery thesis. Sustained breadth, followed by orders and earnings that support it, would strengthen it.
