KOSPI Reclaims 7,000 as Refiners, Optical Suppliers and Testing Stocks Stand Out

Korea’s benchmark finished above 7,000 on October 2, but the session was more selective than that milestone suggests. The KOSPI closed at 7,003.74, up 32.39 points or 0.46%, while the KOSDAQ slipped 1.00 point, or 0.11%, to 893.29. Refining, optical communications and semiconductor testing components offered three distinct pockets of demand.

A positive benchmark, with uneven participation

The KOSPI recovered from an opening level of 6,938.27 and an intraday low of 6,927.88. The KOSDAQ reached 903.88 before finishing below its previous close. Morning momentum therefore overstated the strength that survived into the closing auction.

Nevertheless, post-close market breadth showed more advancing than declining issues in both markets. A falling KOSDAQ did not mean that most smaller companies fell. Participation was broader than its headline decline suggests, but index leadership remained uneven. Foreign investors were net sellers in both markets, while institutions were net buyers. That is a more qualified backdrop than a rally supported by both groups.

Refiners: distinguish oil prices from profit margins

S-Oil (010950) ended the regular session at KRW165,300, compared with an opening price of KRW153,900 and a session high of KRW166,800. Early-session reporting linked strength across refiners to the previous day’s oil rally and concerns about Middle East tensions.

KSI interprets the move as exposure to a changing supply-risk premium. It is not evidence of an equivalent increase in earnings. Refiners buy crude and sell products: the relationship between those prices, inventory effects and sales volumes determines profitability. Product spreads and the durability of the oil move matter more than extrapolating a single strong session.

Optical connectivity: demand expectations need orders

OE Solutions (138080) closed at KRW32,500, above its KRW30,900 opening price but below the KRW34,500 intraday high. Morning reports described a wider optical-communications rally tied to expectations for AI data traffic and network investment.

The company’s official product catalogue confirms its optical-transceiver business. That establishes a relevant business connection, but does not establish a new order from any particular global customer. Customer qualification, production schedules and conversion into recognized revenue are the next tests. The retreat from the day’s high also argues against treating the strongest morning quote as a closing return.

Testing components retain selective buying

LEENO Industrial (058470) finished at KRW84,500 after opening at KRW81,800 and reaching KRW86,900. Its disclosed activities include test probes and IC test sockets. KSI sees the positive opening-to-close move as selective interest in a testing supplier while the broader KOSDAQ finished slightly lower.

This is a business-model interpretation, not a claim that a new contract was announced today. Testing demand depends on customer development and production activity, product complexity and mix. Those drivers differ from equipment capital spending, so one supplier’s resilience cannot establish uniform strength across semiconductors.

What to watch after the holiday

October 5 is a substitute public holiday; the next regular Korean session is October 6. Overseas developments during the break can accumulate before local trading resumes. Watch whether the KOSPI holds 7,000, whether the KOSDAQ can sustain a move above 900, and whether foreign flows improve alongside breadth.

The central question is whether each theme retains its own earnings support: product spreads for refiners, commercial orders for optical suppliers, and customer volumes and margins for testing components. All company prices above refer to October 2 regular-session daily bars and exclude after-hours quotes.
